Jigar Mehta, a University of California alumnus, is in Beijing capturing a behind-the-scenes look at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In today's video feature, he talks to former Cal swimming star Natalie Coughlin, who won six medals in Beijing to set a record for most medals by a U.S. female in one Olympic Games. ------------------ Natalie Coughlin Interview: Well, the swimmers are finally out of the pool and hitting the Olympic party scene. Last night (Sunday) was the famous Speedo Party, which takes place the night of the last day of swimming. All the stars of the pool from Michael Phelps to Dara Torres came, as did Cal's very own six-time medalist in Beijing, Natalie Coughlin. With 11 Olympic medals, Natalie shares the honor with Matt Bondi as being Cal's most decorated Olympian. Natalie looked cool and calm and ready to celebrate with the rest of the U.S. swim team in attendance. She'll be taking a little time off before setting her sites on London in 2012. Another 6 medals Natalie?

The time has come for President Ron Paul. Coughlin founded the National Union for Social Justice, an organization with a strong following among nativists and opponents of the Federal Reserve, especially in the Midwest. As Kazin notes, Coughlinites saw Wall Street and Communism as twin faces of a secular Satan. They defended a "people" who cohered more through piety, economic frustration, and a common dread of powerful, modernizing enemies than through any class identity.

Father Coughlin Before the 1936 Election

"Radio Priest" Father Charles Coughlin became increasingly controversial and anti-Semitic in the 1930s before the Church silenced his broadcasts. He initially supported Roosevelt's New Deal but quickly turned against it. Coughlin had various monetary theories that were common in that era and opposed the Federal Reserve. An alliance began to form between Coughlin's Social Justice movement, the California-based pensionite movement of Dr. Francis Townsend, and Louisiana Senator Huey Long's Share-the-Wealth movement. It appeared that the combined groups would run Long on a third-party campaign that Roosevelt feared would undermine his re-election. As it turned out, after the assassination of Long, the combined movement had no one to run. It ultimately ran an obscure congressman for president in 1936 who received a negligible vote. At the time this newsreel was made, however, all of that was yet to come. Because of the economic distress during the Great Depression, such movements attracted large followings.

Sweden's Therese Alshammar took a big step towards overtaking idle Natalie Coughlin for the overall series lead when she dropped the hammer in the sprint free with a World Cup effort of 23.79. That time stands just 0.02 seconds shy of the top time this year of 23.77 set by Libby Lenton at the Australian Short Course Championships in August. However, Alshammar did eclipse Lenton's World Cup record of 23.85 set at the Sydney stop in November 2005. (WCSN, WCSN.com)
