Recent events in Kenya were predictable. Since January 2007, FIDH has been sounding the alarm about the ethnic clashes orchestrated by political parties, both prior to and following the elections in Kenya. This short documentary, filmed by FIDH in January 2007, illustrates the struggle of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in a displaced camp near Naïvasha, where 300 families have been living since 1992 in harsh conditions, forbidden even from farming the land.

During the Russian -Georgia war a part of the evacuated population from the conflict zone were settled in the southern Israel that is being continuously bombed by the Hamas terrorists. Two families of IDPs from Gori district have been settled in Ashdod city where Palestinians threw missiles four days ago. Seventeen persons have been injured in result. The IDPs from Gori say they feel shocked again after the four-month repatriation.

Nine months after December's post-election violence, there are still many living in IDP camps outside Mathare. Most of the people in the camp are members of the Kikuyu tribe and their homes were destroyed or confiscated by members of the Luo tribe. About 3 months ago the Red Cross stopped giving out food to the people living in the camps. To re-build their homes in Mathare would cost around $10,000ksh (about $150 US); most people living in the camps earn 50-150ksh ($.75-$1.25US) per day and now most of that money will need to be spent on food. Kenya's internally displaced people are still reluctant to return home months after the post-election violence. Over 300,000 war IDPs are facing a humanitarian crises due to ongoing flooding resulting from one week of monsoon rains. The Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL)ordered the United Nations (UN) and international NGOs out of the Vanni leaving Tamils Rehabilitation Organization as the only NGO serving the needs of 300,000 IDPs. For the past 4 months TRO has been urging the GoSL allow temporary shelter building materials, food, medicine, fuel and other essential items into the Vanni. The GoSL continues to impose severe restrictions & embargoes humanitarian relief in violation of International Humanitarian Law and uses food & medicine as a weapon of war in violation of International Human Rights Law.
