Richard Lindzen was on Larry King Live a few nights ago discussing Global Warming with a panel of experts that included Bill Nye the Science Guy. A TV personality and former sketch comedy member against an atmospheric physicist and a professor of meteorology at MIT. Julian Morris and Lindzen make excellent points for which the alarmists have no answer. It's the same old song and dance, they always mention the "consensus" and the IPCC report.

Boiling Water to Make Ice - Triple Point of Water

This is an experiment to obtain a reaction in water molecules called "the triple point". In this case, in the same vessel of water, it will exist in all three states: Vapor, Liquid, and a Solid. After some conversation on the subject on a popular HVAC website, this was yet another experiment I just had to do! What I have done here is add some tap water to a baby food glass jar. I rigged a schrader valve to the lid. The first part of the test I attached two recovery tanks that were already in a deep vacuum. These tanks are the size of your typical Propane Tank for a BBQ grill. A hose is connected from them to the small glass jar. I do this to obtain a quick change from atmospheric pressure in the glass jar to a deep vacuum in a matter of a second. As observed, the water begins to boil instantly but not a big change in temperature. The seal may not have been 100% and it did not maintain 30" of vacuum. (That could be partially due to the water changing into vapor as well without continued pumping). So I then attached a 7CFM vacuum pump directly to the small glass jar. It took a while but the temperature of the water in the jar began to drop from the ambient 78 degrees F in the room to below freezing. At 27 degrees the water still did not change to a solid (ice). That would not happen at atmospheric pressure unless salt or soemthing else was added. Once the water fell to approx 22 degrees it started to change to a solid. After some more pumping I had no liquid water and about 1/4" of ice in the bottom of the glass jar. My basic laymens explaination: Water nomally boils at 212 degrees F at sea level atmospheric pressure. Raise the pressure and it boils at a higher temperature (like in a pressure cooker). But lower the pressure and it will boil at lower temperatures. Lower the pressure enough and you can EASILY boil water at room temperature ~80 degrees F. If the water is in a somewhat insulated environment where it does not easily absorb heat from the surrounding area, like in this glass jar, it will absorb heat form the remaining water. As it continues to remove heat from the remaining water, the remaining water can cool below the freezing point and turn into ice. At that point, you have water in all three forms: Solid, Liquid, Vapor. To read more on this please read this short article: http://www.avs.org/pdf/triple%20point.pdf Or do a search on "triple point of water".

Once again, thanks for your patience guys and girls! New videos should be out more frequently from now on. In this video, we look at some outright lies and general creationist assbaggery about Venus, straight from the mouth of the good preacher, Spike Psarris. Dr. James Kasting's website, with plenty of great research to read, can be found here: http://www.geosc.psu.edu/~kasting/PersonalPage/Kasting.htm Specifically, the paper of direct interest can be downloaded here: http://www.geosc.psu.edu/~kasting/PersonalPage/Pdf/Icarus_88.pdf If you don't mind following a little atmospheric science, it's a highly recommended read. *About Venus' collision: Of course, we cannot directly observe events in the Solar System which happened millions of millenia ago. Current theory is a product of indirect evidence (such as the retrograde motion or high axial tilt - depending on how you look at it) combined with models for planet formation. It's harder to reconcile Venus with biblical creation though, because your conclusion will be in the region of the creator deliberately attempting to confuse its creation, and stifle their academic progress; hardly a loving act. Studying the atmospheric composition of Venus further will shed some light on its ancient history. I would suggest the greatest puzzles with Venus are its highly circular orbit (also a property of fellow freak planet, Uranus) and the fact that it has no moons (which are thought to be products of catastrophic collisions). The planet may well have formed as the result of two large objects actually 'sticking' together. I myself, and the scientific community have no intention of hiding these questions from the public. But I ask that you remember that a gap in our knowledge about something, particularly with no direct evidence, in no way validates jumping to wild conclusions. Future generations will be laughing at people like Spike even harder than we are now. If you're interested in seeing some great videos about inconsistencies with the bible, please check out the series entitled 'An Honest Search for the Truth' by holysinecure: http://www.youtube.com/holysinecure They were kind enough to give me a shout out recently and I'd like to return the favour (but recorded this video before I saw theirs - d'oh!) 30 mins before the 2008 Sichuan earthquake in China

Bizarre colorful (luminous/glowing) cloud phenomenon in the sky was observed about 30 mins before the May 12, 2008 Sichuan earthquake took place. This was recorded in Tianshui, Gansu province ~450km northeast of epicenter, by someone using a cell phone. source: http://news.qq.com/a/20080513/004283.htm See similar cloud formation captured 20 minutes later in a different city, ~200km east of this location: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzVamNQzfYA A map of the locations with sightings of very similar phenomenon. http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/2453/ecjm1.jpg More photos taken, reported 1 hr before the quake.: http://shenyun.epochtimes.com/b5/8/5/14/n2116538.htm These clouds seemed to be glowing or somewhat luminous and seemed to resemble some characteristics of the Auroras. I am not sure exactly what they were or whether they indeed had anything to do with the quake. I am no expert anyways. See if any scientists are willing to give a full explanation. If such phenomenon can be proved for its connection with earthquake occurrences, maybe they could be used as warning signs and would be life saving. If not, just learn these clouds as yet another rare atmospheric phenomenon and no need to panic when seeing them. After all, this might well be just a rare atmospheric phenomenon occurred by coincidence. Though, just wondering if there's any possibility the formation of such rare clouds be catalyzed by any event?? AL STEWART - ONE STAGE BEFORE

AL STEWART RELEASED THIS GREAT ATMOSPHERIC SONG ON HIS ALBUM "YEAR OF THE CAT" (RELEASED IN AUTUMN 1976) THE SONGS WAS PRODUCED BY ALAN PARSONS ! THE WEBSITE OF AL STEWART : WWW.ALSTEWART.COM lyrics It seems to me as though I've been upon this stage before And juggled away the night for the same old crowd These harlequins you see with me, they too have held the floor As here once again they strut and they fret their hour I see those half-familiar faces in the second row Ghost-like with the footlights in their eyes But where or when we met like this last time I just don't know It's like a chord that rings and never dies For infinity. And now these figures in the wings with all their restless tunes Are waiting for someone to call their names They walk the backstage corridors and prowl the dressing-rooms And vanish to specks of light in the picture-frames But did they move upon the stage a thousand years ago In some play in Paris or Madrid? And was I there among them then, in some travelling show And is it all still locked inside my head For infinity. And some of you are harmonies to all the notes I play; Although we may not meet still you know me well While others talk in secret keys and transpose all I say And nothing I do or try can get through the spell So one more time we'll dim the lights and ring the curtain up And play again like all the times before But far behind the music you can almost hear the sounds Of laughter like the waves upon the shores Of infinity.

Google Tech Talks February, 7 2008 ABSTRACT Google Earth is at the forefront of providing the world with detailed ground imagery. A recent study by the French Space Agency (CNES) has created a set of specifications for the next step in satisfying world demand for imagery: resolution of 1-2 meters, latency 2-3 days, all over the land masses. This capability requires 60-80 satellites each carrying a 40 cm diameter camera. Building such a system, as a stand-alone project, is clearly unaffordable. A chance to realize such a system is offered by IRIDIUM-NEXT whose specifications are compatible with the needs of the imagery market, and could be deployed in 2013-2015. This commercial opportunity could by complement by deploying scientific instruments devoted to environmental monitoring and using the same spacecraft and data links. Decisions for IRIDIUM-NEXT have to be made by the system developer, Iridium Satellite LLC in mid 2008. Now is the time to engage in discussions among potential participants to offer an attractive technical and business plan to Iridium Satellite LLC. My presentation will discuss this opportunity to move Google to the next level of service. Speaker: Professor Jacques Blamont Prof. Jacques Blamont directed in 1957 the first launches of the French Veronique rockets. He was instrumental in creating the French space agency, the French National Center for Space Studies or CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales). In 1962, at the creation of CNES, he was appointed technical director. In 1972 he became chief scientist and adviser to the director general of CNES. Involved in atmospheric research, Prof. Blamont discovered the interstellar wind in 1970. He was the author of the first measurements of atmospheric temperature from 100 to 500 km. He made the first measurements of Einstein's general relativity red shift of the Sun. He discovered the hydrogen envelope of comets. Blamont was a member of the Science Steering Groups on the NASA missions Voyager, Pioneer-Venus, and of the USSR balloon mission Vega to Venus and Halley's comet; and a prime investigator on the Soviet Union's Phobos mission. He was a major contributor to the Lunar mission Clementine by the US Department of Defence and, in 1994. He developed image data compression for this mission, multiplying the number of lunar images obtained by 7 (2 million images). Among his honors are the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement, 1972, and Gagarin Medal of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, 1985. He received the Spie Prize (International Society for Optical Engineering) for his space technology achievements. His book Le Chiffre et le Songe (1993) received the French Roberval Prize in 1993 (Prix Grand Public Roberval). Prof. Blamont is currently adviser to the CNES President.

"On the night of April 29, I was trying to focus my camera attacheded to the telescope. The high zooming factor and atmospheric turbulence were causing issues to the focusing steps. The moon appeared "waving" but I immediatly noticed the presence of a small black dot in the corner of our satellite. At first glance I thought it was just dust on the lens of the camera. After taking a better look I saw the dot moving very slowly and it had the classic "distortions" produced by "bad seeing" (atmospheric turbulence). Making a Difference: Individuals Taking Local Action on Global Warming

Google Tech Talks August 27, 2008 ABSTRACT The basic scientific ideas and observational record of rising greenhouse gas (GHG) levels provide potent reasons for concern and action on the climate and clean energy challenge. Since the emissions of GHGs are inextricably linked to fundamental areas of human activity--energy generation, waste disposal, agriculture, etc. -- action is needed at all levels: international, federal, state, municipal, institutional, and individual. Local action by city and county governments, institutions, and individuals reveals exemplary innovation and the important role of public engagement. The Silicon Valley's Sierra Club Chapter -- the Loma Prieta Chapter -- has developed a comprehensive Climate Action Campaign of local action to reduce regional GHG emissions through public engagement. The program has successfully attracted a large number of concerned individuals and consists of four initiatives: An Education and Outreach initiative includes expert lectures to community groups and booths at community events. The Cool Cities Campaign forms teams of residents in each city and county to advocate for local government action. The Climate Action Team initiative combines trainings with social support events to enable individuals to reduce their own emissions and to then take these ideas to institutions where they have a personal connection. A fourth initiative to reduce local barriers to solar power has led to large reductions in solar permit fees charged by over 72 cities. In this talk, we will discuss the Climate Action Campaign as a case study in local action and discuss concrete examples of how individuals can address humanity's historic climate challenge. Speaker: Julio Magalhães, Ph.D Julio Magalhães is the Global Warming Program Coordinator for the Sierra Club's Loma Prieta Chapter. He is an atmospheric physicist with over 15 years experience in planetary climate research, education, and public outreach. He holds a Ph.D and M.S. in Astronomy with an emphasis in atmospheric physics from Cornell University, and a B.S. in Physics from Stanford University. He has previously worked as a planetary climate researcher for NASA and has also taught physics and environmental science at West Valley College. J. Magalhães has been a member of the Hearing Board of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District since 2002.

Electricity from Orbit: The case for R & D

Google Tech Talks December, 5 2007 ABSTRACT Cost-effective space solar power (SSP) -- the beaming abundant high-intensity solar power from space though atmospheric windows at laser or microwave frequencies for electric power at the surface -- could be a breakthrough technology for large-scale power generation, highly flexible power distribution and sustainable carbon-neutral base load for Earth; a goal comparable, but much closer to engineering maturity, to that of controlled thermonuclear fusion. Apart from much higher than the surface mean solar flux, continuous sunlight in space avoids otherwise cost-pacing massive storage and transmission of intermittent terrestrial solar and windpower to match electric demand curves. Access to space cost reductions will likely be driven by economies of scale from commercialization. But SSP would be markedly accelerated by experiments feasible now, some employing ISS, including orbital mirrors and microwave and and laser beaming in space. The just-released report on SSP by the National Security Space Office (available at http://www.nss.org/settlement/ssp/library/nsso.htm) concludes that "it would be in the US Government's and the nation's interest to sponsor an immediate proof-of-concept demonstration project and a formally funded, follow-on architecture study conducted in full collaboration with industry and willing international partners." For example, I will describe our proposed demo of wireless power transmission from geosynchronous orbit (GEO) using diode laser transmitters in space and surface PV module receivers employing a self-deploying single launch one metric tonne satellite payload. Because diffractive beam spreading requires large antennas at microwave frequencies, it would be virtually impossible to launch microwave beamers large enough for efficient space-to-Earth power transfer without expensive multiple launches and in-space assembly. This limitation is overcome with the laser-based system proposed here although commercial SSP power stations might well utilize microwave beaming down the road. This experiment would demonstrate continuous electric power transfer from orbit orders of magnitude greater than anything done before, perhaps powering a remote village off the grid in the developing world. With near term and "on the shelf" components and early launch opportunities like NASA's Geo QuickRide, piggybacks on communication satellite launches, and the ISS as testbed, near term experiments could accelerate SSP from paper studies to a real alternate energy option in as little as a three to five year time frame at relatively modest cost. Speaker: Marty Hoffert Martin I. Hoffert is Professor Emeritus of Physics and former Chair of the Department of Applied Science at New York University. His academic background includes a B.S. (1960) in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; M.S. (1964) and Ph.D. (1967) from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now the Polytechnic Institute of New York) in Astronautics; and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, M.A.L.S. (1969) from the New School for Social Research where he did graduate work in sociology and economics. He has been on the research staff of the Curtiss-Wright Corporation, General Applied Science Laboratories, Advanced Technology Laboratories, Riverside Research Institute and National Academy of Sciences Senior Resident Research Associate at the NASA/Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Prof. Hoffert has published broadly in fluid mechanics, plasma physics, atmospheric science, oceanography, planetary atmospheres, environmental science, solar and winds energy conversion and space solar power. His work in geophysics aimed at development of theoretical models of atmospheres and oceans to address environmental issues, including the ocean/climate model first employed by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to assess global warming from different scenarios of fossil fuel use. His early model of the evolving CO2 greenhouse in Mars' atmosphere is also of interest today -- providing both an explanation of Mars' riverbed-like channels f...
